What did Karen do that destroyed your chances of ever getting promoted with a company? Karen We love stories where Karen discovers instant Karma. But what did Karen do to you that still you off today because your manager took their side? What long lasting effects, if any, did it have on your job? I'll start off:

This was when I worked retail. I was a self-checkout host. My job involved engaging with the customers by providing assistance when needed, answering questions (Where can I find this item?) and correcting price issues when possible (the tag said it was supposed to be $5 but it's ringing up as $10.)
  • 04
My other duties involved my presence being a form of theft deterrent. If the self-checkouts had no host, more of the dishonest types would be encouraged to bag and go without paying. I'm not saying it doesn't happen still. I once prevented a would-be thief from ringing up a $100 item as a 50-cent knickknack.

This one Karen, who was a regular, took particular offense to me doing my job. I remember her because she would come in every day with her entourage looking like they dyed their hair with acid every week. Their hair was always different colors and looked like they dyed it in the dark.
  • 06
For whatever reason, she didn't like me. She would always have an attitude with me and even accused me of profiling her just by standing there. I eventually stopped greeting her.
  • 07
Well, one day, I got called into the office and written up because a customer had written a letter to the ceo complaining that I accused them of theft. It didn't matter what I said on the matter because "We have to believe that our customers are telling the truth."
  • 08
So, how did I know it was the acid- haired Karen? One of my co- workers working the liquor til told me they overheard Karen complaining to her friends that I didn't get fired on the spot and still had my job.
  • 09
Even with my coworker's statement, I couldn't get the write- up removed. Management looked poorly on me, and every attempt I made to move up the payscale was overlooked despite my years with the company. The ones I trained would get promoted, though. Eventually, I left that company.

AdLiving4714 2 days ago. edited 4 hr. ago Karen (attorney) was an absolute micromanager and insisted on signing off even the smallest assignment. This made her the bottleneck of course, but didn't discourage her from telling us that we were not efficient enough. Despite us letting know her superiors multiple times, nothing changed. So we all resigned. It was only once we'd left that they terminated her.

Cinema_King 1 day ago. edited 1 day ago The Karen in my story was a co-worker and instead of ruining my chances for promotion she got me fired. I worked for a mortgage company in the 90s, this was before everything went digital and original documents were more important.

Part of my job was to receive and log the original notes, make copies for our local file, then pass them on to Karen so she could do whatever it was she did. I say it that way partly because I genuinely don't know what her job was but also because I almost never saw her working. When she wasn't outside smoking or taking a several hour lunch she would just sit in her office surrounded by mountains of files that I don't think she ever touched and talk on the phone. And no matter what she was doing
  • 17
Anyway, one day I received a box of about 100 notes so I did my job and brought them to her when I was done. As always she dismissively told me to put the box on her desk which I did.
  • 18
A few days later my boss asked me if I had seen that box and I said I did my part and gave it to Karen. At some point in the last few days she lost it and like any miserable she refused to admit she had ever had it so the blame fell to me since I was the last person who admitted to having possession.
  • 19
Since she was older and had more connections over the next few days she kept up her lie while I kept being honest and acted about a week I was let go.

To say I was would be an understatement. It was my first office job and I was on a good path but thanks to her I had to start over. It also destroyed my only non retail reference so I was stuck there again for a few years which really me off since I was so glad to be out of it.

That's also the closest I ever came to doing something I'd definitely be regretting today even if I felt she deserved it back then. It was almost 30 years ago so the anger has faded and I haven't seen her since but if I ever did I'd probably just pretend I didn't know her. And if I had the chance for some petty revenge I'd consider it but probably pass.
